Music and technology

Thank you for attending the music and technology sessions at curriculum night.  Some parents were interested in accessing music composition tools at home before their children have school accounts in the 4th-6th grade.  Here is the website to access Noteflight Online Music Composition:

http://www.noteflight.com/login

There is a free introductory account and an unlimited account for $49 per year.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Mr. Davis      <andy_davis@wsesu.org>

PE update for October 2013

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone enjoyed the month of October as much as I did.  This month saw us starting a new exercise routine called "Move it down, wrap it around".  Students moved down a line of cones labeled with muscle exercises: animal muscle movement for grades K-2 and muscle challenges for grades 3-6 and at the end of that line of cones students then would wrap around the gym by completing laps for their cardiovascular exercise.  Each class completed different amount of laps depending on their age level.  To keep track of our progress students earned "rep points" for each time they returned to the cone in the line that they started at.  Many students were able to "meet or beat" their rep point number:)

This month saw our students in grades 3-6 participate in NECAP testing.  In PE our younger students learned movements to cheer chants that they then performed at all school sing and NECAP kick off to help encourage our older students.

Our younger students also helped our older students by having their PE outside so the building would be a quiet place to focus in.  We took "neighborhood walks" for their fitness.
Older students participated in soccer skills such as soccer juggling, soccer dribbling and passing.

A favorite game of all was a new one called "Leap Frog".  In groups of 4 students had to move one frog across the pond with lily pads in order to collect a fly.  Once all members have been frogs and collected a fly they sat to signal they were done.

I also used Halloween to focus on the subject of safety and health.  I challenged students to make their Halloween candy last until Thanksgiving!

Welcome Back Oak Grovers!

I hope that you're as excited as I am to be back to school for another active year in PE.  I'm also curious about how you spent your summer especially the ways you chose to be physical!

This school year we'll make sure that we participate in old favorites as well as learn some new exercise routines and games.

Just a reminder to my "old" friends and to inform my "new" friends:

Oak Grove has PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays so please come to school ready for activity by wearing comfortable, easy to move in clothes and shoes.

See you soon,
Mrs. Lane

Our recent events in the gym are:

EXERCISE ROUTINE: Our exercise routine was called RECAP and it was made up of components from most of our previous exercise routines.

LESSON FOCUS: For three weeks we worked on beach ball skills such as the forearm pass and sets.

GAME:  We participated in 3 versions of KEEP IT UP, TEAM CIRCLE KEEP IT UP and then we tried a mini 4 vs 4 beach ball.

To end our year we'll have a focus on ENDURANCE by going outside and using our playground "track".  Each class students will spend 15 minutes trying to earn as many sticks they can by trying to get around the track as quickly as possible.  We'll monitor progress on a chart and strive to either meet or beat our number each class.

After that we'll play some new tag games and some old favorites.

Please enjoy the last days of spring and plan on some summer fun/exercise in the sun:)

PE Update

We've been really busy in the gym the last 6 weeks!  We had a new exercise routine called "Jump Bands" that had the students following a jumping course for their cardiovascular exercise and performing their core muscle exercises.

Our lesson focus was low level gymnastics.  The first week students were introduced to some basic tumbling and balancing skills.  From there each week we added a new piece of gymnastic equipment to use.  Students were able to try their skills on the inclined mat, a low level balance beam and a training vault.  Gymnastic skills seemed to be a hit with novices and "old pros".

Our games this month included "Across the Pond" and "In the Pond"

This last week before vacation sees us exercising and then having some fun for all the hard work we've done since last vacation!

Enjoy the spring weather,
Mrs. Lane
