A Spiral Curriculum
I work with a Framework that is aligned with WSESU’s Modern & Classical Language Curriculum Framework (Novice Level) in an effort to help prepare students to function in a global society. This framework consists of thematic units that together encompass all basic – novice material taught at BUHS. These thematic units cover topics such as:
Each unit is taught at grade levels 2-3 and/or 4-6. The program builds in a spiral sequence making sure that in all activities we are working with the 5C’s of Foreign language learning (communication, connections, collaboration, communities, culture).
Training in second grade focuses primarily on listening, speaking, and communicating and uses basic language scaffolding (word, phrase, sentence) and asking questions at a basic level (who, what, where, how many, when). Formal reading and writing starts at third grade level and spirals up to simple text comprehension and increased fluency by sixth grade.
The level of proficiency attained by the students is always directly related to the amount of time they spend using the foreign language.
I present materials in varied forms recognizing the fact that there are many kinds of learners. Often times I involve the use of arts in the classroom and learning across grade levels. I use visuals, games, physical activities, rhymes, songs, stories, and interactive websites to build upon student’s abilities to listen, speak, communicate, read and write in Spanish. I also work with collaborative theme based projects: individual and group student projects.
